The New South Wales Emergency Services Wilderness Navigation Shield

Every year on the first FULL weekend of July, the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Squad organises and runs this premier navigation event, which attracts entries from local, interstate and overseas organisations, including VRA and SES squads, Bush Fire brigades, the Emergency Services, the Armed Forces and Bushwalking Clubs. The event is endorsed by the NSW State Rescue Board, and entry is open to all groups that participate in search and rescue activities. Members of Rogaining Associations are also invited to participate.

Contestants test their bush skills and compass navigation abilities in an overnight event through wilderness terrain. There is also an easier one-day event, used by many teams as a training exercise.

How the event runs

The Navigation Shield is an overnight navigation event where teams of competitors attempt to gain as many points as possible by finding their way, on foot only, through wilderness terrain to pre-set checkpoints. It is held in an area of around 100 square kilometres of rugged bushland within a few hours drive of Sydney, Australia. Each year a different location is selected to give a wide range of conditions.

The NavShield is an opportunity for the best navigation and rescue teams in the country to compete in unfamiliar terrain and with no support groups. For the rest of us, the event is an opportunity to train our navigation skills in a safe, friendly and multi-service environment. The team registrations can only be done via the web and it is preferred that payment be by direct electronic transfer into the BWRS Inc account. Account details will be shown after web form is submitted, and in an email to the team contact. General information on the NavShield event is here.
